Recipe ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) gnocchi
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese (or any other melty cheese like Fontina or Swiss)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Cook Gnocchi: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the gnocchi according to the package instructions. Drain well and set aside.
  3. Prepare White Sauce: Melt the butter over medium heat in a saucepan. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Sprinkle the flour over the butter and garlic, stirring constantly to make a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden.
  4. Add Cream: Gradually pour in the heavy cream, whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened, about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Add Cheese: Stir in the shredded mozzarella, Gruyere, and grated Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth—season with dried thyme, salt, and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.
  6. Combine Gnocchi and Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked gnocchi and creamy cheese sauce. Stir gently until the gnocchi is evenly coated.
  7. Assemble Casserole: Transfer the gnocchi and sauce mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  8. Bake: Sprinkle additional shredded cheese on top if desired. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
