Ex-FBI Profiler Says ‘Sloppy’ Killer Knew Victims, Stalker Unverified in Idaho Students Murder Update

Idaho authorities are investigating whether one of the college students who was brutally murdered over a week ago had a stalker. According to the Moscow Police Department, they had received “hundreds of pieces of information” indicating that one of the victims, Kaylee Goncalves, had a stalker. According to a news release issued by the MPD on Tuesday, investigators have been unable to corroborate any of these tips.

A criminal profiler has also chimed in on the triple murder case, claiming that the perpetrator was ‘sloppy’ and most likely a young man. Authorities claim they were stabbed many times and that some of them had defensive wounds. Jim Clemente, a retired FBI profiler and behavioral analysis expert, believes the murderer knew one or more of the occupants or was stalking them.

The ex-FBI supervisory special agent also described the killer as ‘sloppy, criminally sophisticated, or forensically sophisticated.’ Clemente added to his theory, saying that the murderer had killed four separate people; he didn’t flee after killing the first one. The expert also stated that he believed the killer’s desire to perform such a blatant murder indicated that he had a relationship with one or more of the victims. According to the crime expert, the killer had to know their schedule, including when they all went to bed and when they would wake up. More than a week after the Nov. 13 killings rattled the 25,000-person Idaho Panhandle town, authorities say they have no recognizable suspects or weapons.

Police also stated on Tuesday that there has been substantial discussion over how to describe the weapon suspected of being used in the attacks. The agency described it as a fix-blade knife – typically stronger than a folding pocket knife, varieties of this blade are used for hunting, survival camping, and military use – and said detectives were still looking for it.

According to the Idaho Statesman, officers have visited a local home improvement store called Moscow Building Supply several times since the stabbings. Last week, the store’s general manager, Scott Jutte, told the newspaper that police had enquired about Ka-Bar knives, a brand of combat-style, fixed-blade knives, and whether the store sold them.

Ethan Chapin, 20, of Mount Vernon, Washington; Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Xana Kernodle, 20, of Post Falls, Idaho; and Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho are the victims. Mogen, Kernodle, and Goncalves were roommates in the house where all four bodies were discovered. Chapin was dating Kernodle, but they didn’t live together.

The  Moscow Police Department  announced on Sunday that it has investigated hundreds of leads and questioned dozens of people in the week following the heinous triple homicide. Police continue to suspect the incident was planned, but would not provide any other information.
