The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has allowed Florida to become the first state in the nation to directly import drugs from Canada, at cheaper rates. The state has to follow rules set by the agency before it imports the medicines. The proposal to import drugs was formulated more than two decades ago, when former president Clinton signed a law in October 2000 that permitted reimportation. The permission given under the Biden administration is subject to conditions.
The approval marks a shift in policy and U.S. pharmaceutical lobbying organizations have objected to the decision. Although individuals in the U.S. can buy cheaper drugs from Canada and elsewhere states were unable to do so.
The approval from the FDA, with conditions, is seen as a victory for both the Biden administration as well as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Both the Democratic president Joe Biden and the Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis had been working for years to lower the prices of drugs in the nation.
On Friday, the nation’s drug regulators said that it was working with other states across the nation after allowing Florida to import drugs from Canada. Drugs in the U.S. are among the most expensive in the world. The FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said that states should prove that there were significant cost savings for consumers “without adding risk of exposure to unsafe or ineffective drugs.”
Florida, which has become the first state to receive approval from the agency, has to submit drug-specific information that would be reviewed and approved by the FDA. The state has to provide evidence that the drugs they want to import have been tested and that they comply with the standards set by the FDA.
The agency said that the administration in Florida has to submit a quarterly report. This report will detail cost savings, safety and quality issues, and other information about imported drugs.
The FDA will authorize Florida’s plan for two years after it receives notification about a shipment of drugs that would be imported from Canada. Other states including Colorado, Texas, and Wisconsin are also seeking approval from the FDA to allow the import of drugs.
