A Texas FedEx driver has been formally charged with capital murder and two charges of aggravated kidnapping in connection with the alleged kidnapping and strangulation of a seven-year-old child from her Dallas home. If found guilty, the driver would likely be executed. On Friday, a jury in Wise County indicted Horner for the kidnapping and murder of the young child.

Two days after Athena Strand was allegedly kidnapped by a FedEx driver who was bringing a package to her residence, her body was found in Texas.
She passed away ‘within an hour’ of being taken from her Paradise home, according to investigators.
Tanner Horner claimed to have accidentally run over Athena Strand with his truck on November 30. He claimed to have “panicked,” seized her, and driven off with her. He revealed that he strangled her in the truck and dumped her body by a country road about seven miles from her house. He claimed he was concerned about what would happen if he told her parents he had accidentally hit her. Her body was found on December 2.
On Thursday, Horner was charged with two counts of aggravated kidnapping and the murder of a child under the age of ten. When Athena was abducted, the suspect had just given her father a “You Can Be Anyone” Barbie doll as a Christmas present from her mother. Horner could receive the death penalty or life in prison without parole if found guilty of capital murder. He continues to be detained in the Wise County Prison on a $1.56 million bond and is also accused of four separate counts of child sex abuse that date back to 2013.

Maitlyn Gandy, Strand’s mother, issued a statement regarding the charges. She thanked the Wise County grand jury. Gandy claimed that one of the most trying times in her life was when she laid her young daughter to rest and saw her face for the last time.
Over ten years ago, Horner was accused of sexually abusing a kid. In 2013, three further counts of sexual abuse against children were brought against Horner in Fort Worth. On $1.5 million bail, he is being kept in custody.
Jacob Strand, Athena’s father, has filed a lawsuit against FedEx and the contractor Big Topspin for negligence. He is alleging that not enough background checks were done on Horner before he was hired.
