During the small submarine’s Sunday dive to the tragedy scene off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, communication was lost an hour and a half in. Contact between the sub and its mothership, Polar Prince, was lost an hour and 45 minutes into the sub’s 2-mile dive to the Titanic catastrophe on Sunday morning. The ship’s connection to the outer world was broken.
On Tuesday, June 23, 2023, the OceanGate submarine that carried five people on a mission to experience a once in a lifetime voyage to see the Titanic wreckage experienced a catastrophic implosion, killing all five on board.
According to investigators, the remotely operated vehicle discovered fragments of the sub roughly 1,600 feet from the shipwreck’s bow.
Whether the catastrophic implosion took place at the point the submersible ceased communicating about one hour and forty-five minutes into its dive is still up for debate among authorities. Debris from the Titan submersible was discovered roughly 1,600 feet from the famous Titanic ruins, bringing a multinational search effort that had been ongoing for days to a close on Thursday. According to US Coast Guard Rear Adm. John Mauger, military analysts determined the debris was compatible with the tragic loss of the small vessel’s pressure chamber.
However, when the vessel’s hull was being developed, at least two former OceanGate workers raised concerns about safety, especially those related to testing processes and the carbon fiber frame’s thickness.
According to lawsuits Lochridge and OceanGate filed against one another that year, on January 18, 2018, OceanGate employee David Lochridge forwarded to the organization’s executives an engineering report he had written that was critical of OceanGate’s research and development procedure for the Titan.
Lochridge was particularly worried about the materials used in the hull and the absence of testing done on the hull to determine its resistance to the extreme pressures of deep waters.
OceanGate’s statement read, “These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans.” “Our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time. We grieve the loss of life and joy they brought to everyone they knew.”
