GOP Governor Sununu disagrees with Trump’s suggestion to pardon Capitol rioters, if in power

Although Trump might be considered as the tallest figure in the Republican Party by many, some of his comments cannot be digested by saner and more conservative voices in the GOP. His recent comments in a Texan rally where he spoke of pardoning January 6 rioters has faced condemnation from his own party members including Governor Chris Sununu of New Hampshire and many others and exposed some of the fissures in the party.

On Sunday, Chris Sununu told CNN’s Dana Bash that the folks who had been a “part of the riots” and who had gone on to “assault” the U.S. Capitol had to be held “accountable.” He said that the nation had a “rule of law.”

Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union” the New Hampshire Governor added that he didn’t care if a person was a “part of burning cities in Antifa in 2020” or was a part of “storming the Capitol in 2021.” He said that everybody had to be held accountable for their actions. The reference to 2020 was the racial justice protests that were held in that year, some of which turned violent.

Referring to the Capitol rioters Bash questioned him whether they shouldn’t be pardoned and he replied, “Of course not. Oh my goodness, no.”

Senator Susan Collins, a moderate Republican from Maine said that she didn’t think that Trump should have pledged to pardon the rioters. She called January 6, “a dark day in our history” and said that the “judicial process” should be allowed to proceed.

Lindsey Graham, a pro-Trump Republican told CBS’ “Face the Nation” that he didn’t want to reinforce that “defiling the Capitol was ok.” Instead he wanted to deter the people who did what they did on January 6. He said that he hoped that they went to “jail” and that they got “the book thrown at them” because they deserved it.

However, some of Trump’s allies have asked for the rioters to be pardoned. There have been several attempts to sweep the happenings of January 6 under the carpet or scuttle the attempts of the House committee that is looking in to the January 6 riot. However, on Sunday, Trump openly announced that pardons would be given if he decided to run for the presidential elections and if he won.
