The Pacific Northwest is facing a record-breaking heat wave. On Saturday, Portland Oregon recorded a temperature of 108 degrees Fahrenheit. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport also recorded a high temperature of 102 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday afternoon. The weather services predict that temperatures will rise up to Tuesday and new highs will be reached and heat records could be broken.

Portland, Oregon

After Portland International Airport recorded a high temperature of 108 degrees on Saturday, visitors and residents were gathering at the Salmon Street Springs Fountain and at the waterfront according to a report from KATU, a CNN affiliate.

Nonprofit groups were extending help to the homeless in Portland and other cities in Oregon by providing cooling centers. The Medford Senior Center offered food, water, and cold drinks, according to KOBI, a CNN affiliate.

The Oregon Health Authority lifted capacity restrictions that were in place due to the COVID pandemic in swimming pools, movie theaters and malls in a bid to cool the residents.

On Sunday, Portland reached a temperature of 112 while Medford reached 115 according to the Washington Post.

Seattle, Washington

Although Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was just one degree below the 103-degree record set on July 29, 2009, the probability of this record being broken is extremely high as the temperatures Sunday morning were climbing high. Temperatures on Sunday reached 104 setting a new record according to the agency and Monday could be another day of record-breaking heat, according to the weather service.
