250 Million Americans are under a severe weather alert. Wind chill warnings, watches and advisories currently extend from the Northwest to as far south as the Gulf Coast and east into the Eastern U.S. A powerful winter storm is also expected with the blast to produce heavy snow and blizzard conditions in the Midwest and Great Lakes.
Denver reported a record-breaking 37-degree temperature drop in a single hour. The 75-degree decrease came close to breaking the previous 18-hour temperature swing record of 76 degrees set on December 14, 2008.
A bomb cyclone is approaching the East Coast with up to three feet of flooding. Beginning Friday, winds of up to 60 mph are expected from the Great Lakes region to Buffalo, New York, and in parts of New England, possibly knocking out power. A bomb cyclone is a mid-latitude storm in which the central air pressure drops by one millibar per hour for at least 24 hours. Normal atmospheric pressure is around 1010 millibars, which is a measurement of the force exerted by the weight of the atmosphere.
A powerful winter storm is expected to cause widespread disruption and, in some cases, crippling effects over the central and eastern United States. Record-breaking cold and life-threatening wind chills will blanket the eastern half of the country by Friday. Significant freezing rain is expected to fall across sections of western Oregon and Washington starting tonight.
Flight Aware reports more than 3,440 flight cancellations. The wind gusts in Chicago are expected to reach 50 mph. New York is expected to have 20-30 wind gusts and coastal flood concerns are up. Temperatures across the central High Plains have already plummeted 50 degrees F in just a few hours, with widespread subzero readings extending throughout much of the central/northern Plains and northern Rockies/Great Basin.
These temperatures combined with sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph and higher wind gusts of up to 60 mph will continue to lead to wind chills as low as minus 40 degrees across a large swath of the Intermountain West and northern/central Plains, with more localized areas of minus 50 to minus 70 possible through the end of the week.
