Maryam Mirzakhani was the first and only woman, to date, to receive the Fields Medal. As a high school student, she was the first female contestant of Iran to join the International Math Olympiad (considered to be the Olympics of the Math arena) and brought home the first ever gold for the country. She joined again the following year and perfected the contest.
During her Fields Medal acceptance speech, Mirzakhani said, “I will be happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians.”
Her death is a most tragic loss not just to the Math world, but humanity as well.
