A shooter, Anthony Dwayne McRae, opened fire at an academic building and the student union on the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing on Monday night, leaving three students dead and five others injured, according to authorities.
Police located Anthony McRae, 43, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound off campus after an hourlong manhunt. According to Ewing police, there was a note in the shooter’s pocket that the investigators said included a threat against two Ewing, New Jersey, public schools.
Police said there was no known motivation. According to MSU officials, the suspect, 43-year-old Anthony McRae, was not connected to the university.
In Lansing, Michigan, 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae shared a small home with his father. His father claimed that although his son had previously worked for nearly seven years at a warehouse loading refrigerators into trucks, he was having problems keeping a job.
Police have released the names of two students who died from gunshot injuries. Alexandria Verner, a junior, was from Clawson, while Brian Fraser, a sophomore, was from Grosse Pointe, Michigan. At the request of the family, authorities indicated they will not be naming the third victim.

Dana Nessel the Michigan State attorney said to CNN in an interview, “This is an individual who just recently was off probation for a gun offense, and in the exact same area. We know that he had his probation extended a couple of times and not sure why, and I’d like to know that.” “We know that the gun that he was carrying, he was obviously carrying illegally. He was a convicted felon.”
