Devastating wildfires have wreaked havoc across the picturesque landscapes of Maui, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming multiple lives. As of the latest reports, authorities confirm that the death toll from the Maui wildfires has tragically risen to 111 deaths and that number is feared to greatly rise. Still, 1,000 or more residents are not accountant for as the authorities and residents are seeing charred bodies alongside roads. It was reported many died in their cars trying to escape.

Advanced technologies have been made available by the development of DNA technology and subsequent discoveries. Using genetic information or other tools and gathering the data required to get a match is exceedingly difficult and there may be no results at all.

Identifying burned bodies using DNA can be a challenging and complex process, but it is a crucial forensic technique that has significantly advanced in recent years. The difficulty of identification depends on several factors, including the extent of the burns, the condition of the remains, the availability of suitable DNA samples, and the expertise of forensic professionals.

Extreme heat from fires can cause extensive damage to both soft tissues and DNA molecules, making traditional DNA extraction and analysis methods more difficult. High temperatures can cause DNA degradation and fragmentation, potentially limiting the amount of intact DNA available for analysis.

However, advancements in forensic science and DNA analysis techniques, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and short tandem repeat (STR) analysis, have enabled forensic experts to work with degraded or fragmented DNA samples. These techniques allow for the amplification of even small amounts of DNA, which can then be used for comparison with reference samples from potential relatives.

If DNA fails, traditional methods such as dental records can be used as well as implants and prosthetics.
