Nick Allen and Tyler Nevin homered in the third inning, Alex Wood pitched 5 2/3 gritty innings and the Oakland Athletics beat the host New York Yankees 3-1 on Thursday night.

The A’s earned a split of the four-game series despite scoring three runs or fewer for the seventh straight game and 17th time overall. Oakland also homered for the 10th straight game when Allen and Nevin connected in a four-batter span.

Allen hit a tying home run a few rows back in the left field seats with one out in the third. It was Allen’s first homer since Aug. 25, 2023.

Darell Hernaiz singled, and two batters later, Nevin sent a drive into the short porch in right for a 3-1 lead.

Wood (1-2) allowed one run and eight hits. He struck out five, walked two and put runners on base in every inning but the third.

Wood loaded the bases in the first and fourth innings but got double plays each time. He lowered his ERA from 7.89 to 6.59.

After the first three Yankees reached, Wood struck out Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo bounced into a double play. In the second inning, the left-hander picked Gleyber Torres off first before Jose Trevino homered off the right field foul pole.

The Yankees also loaded the bases in the fourth following Alex Verdugo’s single, but Trevino hit into a double play.

Lucas Erceg whiffed Aaron Judge and Stanton in the seventh and Mason Miller retired Judge to finish a four-out save, his sixth of the year.

Nestor Cortes (1-2) allowed three runs and five hits in seven innings. He struck out four, walked none and matched his second-longest outing of the season.

The left-hander also dodged a scare when he avoided Abraham Toro’s comebacker in the sixth. Toro hit a ball back to the mound and Cortes dove on his back on the third base side after putting his glove up to avoid getting hit.
