Kyle Schwarber had two singles and two RBIs to lift the Philadelphia Phillies past the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif.

Whit Merrifield added two hits for the Phillies.

The Phillies won despite striking out 18 times.

Phillies starter Zack Wheeler (3-3) tossed five innings and allowed five hits, one run and one walk with six strikeouts. Wheeler threw 106 pitches, 67 for strikes.

Teammate Gregory Soto allowed two hits but threw a scoreless ninth inning for his second save.

Ehire Adrianza hit a solo home run for the Angels in the second inning.

Taylor Ward, Luis Rengifo, Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel had two hits each for the Angels.

Starter Patrick Sandoval (1-5) gave up four hits and two runs with 10 strikeouts and two walks in five innings.

Ward flied out to Schwarber at the left-field fence with runners on first and third to end the game.

The Phillies placed runners at first and second with one out in the second inning, but Edmundo Sosa struck out and Cristian Pache walked to load the bases. Schwarber worked a full count and responded with a two-run single to center field for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Adrianza ripped a solo home run to right-center to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Angels threatened in the third with runners on first and second with one out, but Matt Thaiss struck out and Kevin Pillar popped out to second.

Sandoval struck out Bryce Harper looking, his 10th of the game, to end the top of the fifth.

Left-hander Matt Strahm retired the Angels in order in the sixth.

Merrifield walked on four pitches to open the seventh inning. Sosa struck out looking and Merrifield then stole second. Pache struck out and Schwarber lined an infield single to Rengifo at second base. The ball bounced away and Merrifield was thrown out at home trying to score.

Pillar’s infield single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth gave the Angels runners at first and second with two outs. Pinch hitter Cole Tucker flied out to shallow right to end the inning.
