More GM and Stellantis operations are hit by UAW strikes, which have stretched to 38 sites across 20 states.

On Friday, 38 General Motors (GM.N) and Stellantis (STLAM.MI), part-distribution locations in 20 states were affected by the United Auto Workers union’s expansion of its strike against major automakers.

According to UAW President Shawn Fain, Ford was spared future strikes because the business complied with some of the union’s requests during negotiations over the previous week.

At Ford (F.N), we’ve really advanced, Fain added. “We still have significant problems to resolve, but we want to acknowledge that Ford is demonstrating that they are committed to coming to an agreement. It’s a different tale at GM and Stellantis. Fain claimed that although Ford had modified its contract proposal—increasing profit sharing and allowing workers to walk out in protest of plant closures—the union still has “serious issues” with the automaker.

On Tuesday evening, Ford managed to secure an eleventh-hour agreement, preventing a potential work stoppage at its Canadian facilities. Unifor, representing approximately 5,600 Canadian automotive employees, had been on the verge of initiating a strike across all three Ford plants in the nation.

Employees at 38 distribution centers operated by GM and Stellantis, spanning across 20 different states, initiated a work stoppage at 12 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday. This action came in response to UAW President Shawn Fain’s announcement that the two corporations had shown no willingness to compromise on crucial matters during the ongoing discussions for a new contract.

During a Facebook Live address, Fain was seen wearing a UAW-branded shirt with a camouflage design, emphasizing the union’s steadfast commitment to expanding the strike’s scope as negotiations persist.

Next week, former president Donald Trump, who is running for re-election, will travel to Michigan to speak with autoworkers about the strike.
