NFL News: Giants ‘optimistic’ about QB Daniel Jones for Week 6

The New York Giants are “optimistic” about quarterback Daniel Jones’ odds of playing in Week 6 after leaving Sunday’s game with a neck injury.

“I’d say we’re optimistic. He’s feeling better today so I think he’s moving in the right direction,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters Monday. “(We’ll) see where he is, obviously, when he comes back on Wednesday but he doesn’t feel terrible today.”

Daboll added that he hadn’t seen the results of the X-rays or scans yet. Jones had an X-ray at the stadium in Miami and was having an MRI on Monday.

NFL Network reported Monday morning that the injury isn’t as serious as the one he sustained in 2021.

Jones exited the 31-16 loss to the Dolphins early in the fourth quarter. He was sacked by Miami linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel with 12:11 remaining in the game. The hit took Jones by surprise, as it came from his blind side, and his neck cocked backward before he was driven to the turf.

Tyrod Taylor took over under center for the Giants, who were trailing 31-13 at the time of Jones’ departure.

Prior to exiting, Jones completed 14 of 20 passes for 119 yards. He was sacked six times.

Jones has completed 68.9 percent of his passes for 884 yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions through five starts this season.

Jones, 26, signed a four-year contract worth $160 million during the offseason.

Also Monday, Daboll said receiver Wan’Dale Robinson would likely miss Wednesday’s practice while defensive back Deonte Banks is likely to be limited. But Daboll thinks both will be able to play in Week 6 at Buffalo.

Daboll said he’ll have more on Wednesday regarding the injuries of OL John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), LB Micah McFadden (foot) and edge rusher Azeez Ajulari (ankle).
