Oregon Becomes a ‘Death Tourism Destination’, Its DWDA Allows Assisted Suicide for Terminally Ill Non-Residents

Oregon, the Pacific Northwestern state in the United States, is the first to permit physician-assisted death for non-residents. It now accepts “death tourism” and allows terminally ill non-residents to cross state lines and end their lives. The search for a lethal concoction of drugs to end their lives has begun for terminally ill residents of Texas and other states that have outlawed assisted suicide. The decision was made in response to a lawsuit brought by an Oregon doctor who alleged that the state’s Death with Dignity Act’s (DWDA) residency requirement was unconstitutional.

Death tourism refers to non-terminally ill people traveling to another location and using the services of death clinics in that location to end their lives. Subsets of death tourism include euthanasia and assisted suicide. With assisted suicide, the patients ultimately commit suicide.

An advocate of ‘magic mushroom’ therapy, Dr. Nicholas Gideonse has led the charge to make Oregon the first US state to allow terminally ill non-residents to travel there and end their lives. According to DailyMail, at least one clinic in the liberal stronghold of Portland has begun accepting people across the state border who have less than six months to live and meet the other strict requirements of the state’s DWDA.

The state agreed to allow out-of-staters access to doctor-assisted suicide last year, but this is not expected to be codified into law until later this year, placing Dr. Gideonse and the clinic in legal limbo. In spite of this, the director of End-of-Life Choices Oregon recently admitted to a panel that he was recommending terminally ill non-residents travel to Oregon to end their lives. According to the clinic’s website, out-of-state residents must be able to spend at least 15 days in Oregon to process the paperwork, which needs approval from two doctors and witnesses before the patient can self-administer the lethal dose.

However, for family members who might assist a loved one in traveling to Oregon from a state that practices prohibition, the death tourism destination raises challenging legal issues. As a result, they might be detained or even charged with a crime in their home state.

According to reports, in 2021, 383 patients reportedly received prescriptions in accordance with the DWDA. As of January 21, 2022, there were 238 people who died as a result of taking prescription drugs in 2021, and 20 among them had received a prescription earlier.
