PGA News: Bryson DeChambeau holds first-round lead at PGA Championship

Bryson DeChambeau sits alone atop the PGA Championship leaderboard through 18 holes as the delayed first round wrapped up early Friday morning at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, N.Y.

DeChambeau is a first-round leader for the third time in his career and shot 4-under in his opening round, one stroke better than the four players. That group includes Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners of Canada, Dustin Johnson and Eric Cole, who fell back from the lead position by finding the water in his morning return to wrap up the first round Friday.

Cole, a tour rookie, hit the pillow Thursday as the leader of the delayed first round. Play wasn’t completed due to darkness following a two-hour shift in the Thursday morning start times due to frost.

DeChambeau is 0-for-2 in bids to win tournaments in which he held the 18-hole lead.

Scheffler played a bogey-free first round in a major for the first time in his career and has now finished within the top 10 at the end of nine of his past 12 rounds in majors.

Johnson, a two-time PGA Championship runner-up (2019, 2020), finished eighth in the 2013 PGA Championship at Oak Hill.

World No. 1 Jon Rahm has work to do after a 6-over 76 in the first round. His streak of making the cut in 16 consecutive majors could be in jeopardy. He last missed the cut in a major at the 2019 PGA Championship.
