Atlanta Police have identified the woman who tried to burn down Martin Luther King’s house in the city. Tourists told the police that a women attempted to burn down the home where MLK was born. At least two tourists saw her pouring gasoline on and around the property.
Authorities identified the woman as Laneisha Shantrice Henderson. The 26-year old woman is reportedly a U.S. Navy veteran. She earned medals for good conduct and other accolades during her four year service. She was charged with second-degree arson as well as interfering with government property.
Henderson had been taken for a psychological evaluation to Grady Detention on Thursday. After her discharge, she is expected to be transferred to Fulton County Jail, according to the police.
The incident report said a tourist had asked the woman what she was doing and also noticed that she had a gasoline container. She was requested to stop but she began pouring gasoline much faster around the house.
Witnesses also said that she allegedly attempted to spark the lighter she was holding. A witness recorded a video of her throwing a liquid in a red canister around the property. The young woman had doused the front porch and the bushes in the historical place. She was dressed in black pants, a black shirt and a black knit cap. Witnesses and bystanders also attempted to stop her from burning the place down.
Police reached MLK’s birth home located on Auburn Avenue, near King Center a little after 5.45 p.m. They said that two off-duty NYPD officers had detained a suspect till they could arrive at the scene. These officers had been visiting the center. Atlanta police arrested the woman who had been detained by bystanders and took her into custody.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Center expressed their gratitude to the “good samaritans” and to the law enforcement and other departments as they helped stopped Henderson. The statement also said that that their “prayers are with the individual who allegedly committed this criminal act.”
