On Wednesday, a 24-year-old Berkeley man called Bradley Marcrum was taken into custody after he allegedly set a 68-year-old man on fire. The unprovoked attack took place last month. The disturbing incident unfolded on June 28, 2023, in Berkeley, California, leaving the unsuspecting victim in a life-threatening situation.
Marcrum has been charged with attempted mayhem, murder, and elder abuse. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) police arrested Marcrum on suspicion of robbery, leading to his capture.
According to authorities, Marcrum approached the 68-year-old victim near the intersection of Bonar Street and University Avenue in Berkeley around 8 p.m. Eyewitnesses reported hearing arguments shortly before the attack, during which Marcrum allegedly doused the victim, whom he did not know, with gasoline and set him ablaze. Immediately after the horrifying act, the assailant fled the scene.
The gravity of the situation was tempered by the quick actions of bystanders. Several individuals witnessed the attack, and one person bravely extinguished the flames using water. Another person promptly provided aid to the victim, potentially saving his life. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently listed in stable condition, despite suffering extensive burns.
After a thorough investigation involving security footage and witness statements, law enforcement authorities were able to identify Marcrum as the suspect. BART police apprehended him in Pleasanton and subsequently took him into custody on suspicion of robbery. Marcrum is now being held without bond at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
It has come to light that Marcrum has a history of violence, as he was previously out on bail following an arrest by the Berkeley Police for brandishing a metal ski pole and chasing a man involved in a neighbor dispute near Francisco & Curtis several months prior to this heinous incident.
