According to Detroit police, a distressing incident took place on Wednesday evening when a six-year-old boy discovered an unsecured firearm at home and accidentally shot his one-year-old sibling twice. The incident took place while the baby was happily bouncing in a chair in his house on Tennessee Street in Detroit.
Detroit Police Department Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald informed that the infant sustained injuries to the cheek and shoulder but is currently in stable condition. When the shooting happened, their father was in the backyard working on a fence with other kids and an uncle, while their mother was across the street at a relative’s home, according to Fitzgerald.

During a press conference, Assistant Chief Fitzgerald expressed frustration over another tragedy that could have been prevented, emphasizing that the child had fortunately survived. The semi-automatic gun responsible for the incident was unsecured and unregistered. Although no arrests have been made, the parents of the children are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Investigators searched the place and collected evidence to present to the Wayne County prosecutor.
Assistant Chief Fitzgerald stressed the importance of securing firearms, mentioning options such as gun locks, gun safes, and placing firearms out of reach.
