Sun rally, then fend off Sky to remain undefeated

DeWanna Bonner scored eight of her 19 points in the fourth quarter and the Connecticut Sun remained undefeated by holding off the host Chicago Sky 86-82 on Saturday night.

Brionna Jones and DiJonai Carrington scored 16 each, Tyasha Harris had 15 and Bonner added eight rebounds.

Marina Mabrey scored 23 points, Angel Reese and Dana Evans had 13 each, Chennedy Carter scored 11 and Elizabeth Williams had 10 to lead the Sky.

Evans scored the first points of the fourth quarter by making two free throws that tied the score at 69. Tiffany Mitchell scored the next four points and Jones added a basket as the Sun opened a 75-69 lead.

Mabrey answered with a field goal and three assists, the last of which came on Evans’ 3-pointer that gave Chicago a 79-78 lead.

Bonner scored the next five points and Harris added a jumper to give Connecticut an 85-79 lead with 3:26 left.

Mabrey’s 3-pointer produced the Sky’s first points in more than four minutes and got them within 85-82 with 1:02 left. Carrington made one of two free throws for a four-point lead with 10.5 seconds left.

Jones scored the first four points of the third quarter, starting a 10-2 run that pulled the Sun even at 52.

Reese made a free throw to break the tie, then the lead changed hands seven times, the last of which came when Bonner beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer that gave Connecticut a 69-67 lead at the end of the period.

The Sky led by five points three times during the first quarter before the Sun made a push. Consecutive field goals by Rachel Banham, Alyssa Thomas and Bonner gave Connecticut a one-point lead before Carter’s last-second layup gave Chicago a 24-23 edge at the end of the quarter.

Banham’s 3-pointer started the second-quarter scoring and gave Connecticut a brief lead before Carter scored seven points to help Chicago open a 36-30 lead.

The Sun scored the next six points before Reese broke the tie by making two free throws. She added a field goal and Mabry scored five points as the Sky extended the lead to 10 before holding a 50-42 halftime lead.
