On Monday, the Supreme Court granted permission for federal immigration officers to take down the razor wire that Texas state officials had erected along a portion of the U.S.-Mexico border to deter illegal immigration.

In a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court granted the Biden administration’s motion to overturn an injunction issued by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals regarding razor wire installed along Texas’ border with Mexico.

A lower court decision from the previous year had prohibited the federal government from taking down the razor wire that Gov. Greg Abbott’s National Guard soldiers had erected along the banks of the Rio Grande, close to the Texas border town of Eagle Pass, which is a popular area for unauthorized crossings.

The wire was approved by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican serving three terms in office, as part of an aggressive campaign to stop illegal border crossings from Mexico. According to his spokesman, the lack of razor wire and other barriers encourages migrants to take risks when crossing the border. It makes the work of Texas border officials more challenging.

“Texas’ political stunts, like placing razor wire near the border, simply make it harder and more dangerous for frontline personnel to do their jobs,” White House spokesperson Angelo Fernández Hernández said.

According to Governor Abbott’s spokesperson, Andrew Mahaleris, “This case is ongoing, and Governor Abbott will continue fighting to defend Texas’ property and its constitutional authority to secure the border.”

Amy Coney Barrett, Ketanji Brown Jackson, Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, and Chief Justice John Roberts supported the administration. Texas was the voting state for Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Clarence Thomas.
