Bexar County Sheriff

A Texas gunman who has allegedly been identified as the killer of his parents in Bexar County continued on a shooting spree, killing four other people and wounding three others in Austin. The gunman is in the custody of the Austin police and has been charged with murder.

According to Texas Public Radio, authorities have said that the two people who were murdered in their home in East Bexar County were identified as Phyllis James and Shane James Sr. The 55-year-old woman and 56-year-old man were reportedly killed by their 34-year-old son Shane James Jr., who lived with them.

Authorities also said that James Jr. continued his shooting spree after traveling for more than 80 miles. He allegedly killed four more people and wounded three others, including a police officer and an ISD School District Officer from Austin, as well as a cyclist.

On Tuesday evening, after a police chase in Southwest Austin, Shane James Jr. was taken into custody by the Austin police and has been charged with the Capitol Murder of Multiple Persons in Travis County. He has not yet been charged with the murder of his parents in Bexar County.

According to the radio station, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said that they were not aware of how and why he selected his victims. However, the shell casings found in the home on Port Royal Street in East Bexar matched “at least some of the shell casings found in Austin.”

Salazar also said that Shane James Jr. had been charged previously and that there had been active warrants against him for assault as well as bodily injury.

In 2015, Shane James Jr. faced a dishonorable discharge from the military following a domestic violence incident.
