A Texas pastor Reverend Ralph D West II is liable to pay a woman more than two million dollars after he infected her with herpes. A civil trial was conducted and a jury found him liable, five years after the claim was made. Reverend Ralph D. West II faced a three-day trial and after a seven-hour deliberation the jury concluded that he had given an unidentified woman genital herpes, according to a popular TV station. He has been ordered to pay $2.45 million to her.
KPRC reported the news, and said that a woman had claimed that pastor West had infected her with genital herpes in 2018. Both of them had met via social media, on Facebook.
Her lawyer, Shaun Murphy had claimed that the reverend had lied to her about his infection with herpes. She used “medical records” to help identify the “source” of her herpes outbreak and was able to pinpoint West as the source. She also “hadn’t been with anybody else.”
According to Click2Houston, attorney Murphy said, “You can’t fix it, she’s got it for the rest of her life.” He also said that subsequent conversations between the woman and the pastor supported her claims that West was the one who had infected her.
Murphy said that when his client asked West, “Where did this come from? His response was, his son’s mother.”
Murphy also said that his client had accused West of “knowing that he had it, of giving it to her” and more, West had “never once denied that he had it or that he knew he had it.”
Murphy said that his client was relieved and felt vindicated after Revered West was ordered to pay her $2.45 million.
Murphy also said that she hoped that this case would “spread awareness” that people could and would be held accountable if they knowingly put partners at risk for STDs.
Reverend West is listed as a minister on the website of Church Without Walls. He has not responded when asked for comments. He remains a minister on the site, up to when this article has been published.
