After several months of anticipation, a feline friend has moved into the White House. Willow, a two-year old Tabby has joined Commander, a German shepherd puppy who began living in the White House, last December. The President is fond of German Shepherds while the gray and white striped short hair cat endeared herself to the First Lady, Jill Biden in 2020.

Michael LaRosa, spokesperson of Jill Biden, said that the cat had been named Willow after her hometown Willow Grove in Pennsylvania. Jill had first met the cat as it was a young farm cat. The cat jumped on stage during a campaign stop by the First Lady. She interrupted Jill’s remarks.

The owner of the farm said that there was an immediate bond between the cat and Dr. Jill Biden. So, the owner knew that the cat belonged to her. The First Lady spoke of a cat joining them in the White House, last April. She confirmed her intentions about a cat in the house with NBC and said that the cat was “waiting in the wings.”

President Biden is a longtime dog lover. Earlier, they had two dogs in the White House. Their beloved German shepherd Champ died at the age of 13, last June. Their younger rescue dog, Major was involved in biting incidents at the White House.

Although Major was sent for training, animal behavior experts told the Bidens that the dog would be better off in quieter surroundings. They sent him to live with family friends in Delaware. Commander the pup, was a birthday gift to Biden and was given to him by his brother.

LaRosa also said that Willow was settling into the White House with her “favorite toys and treats” and that she had plenty of space to “smell and explore.” Many American Presidents have brought cats into the White House, with Lincoln being the first one with Tabby and Dixie who were gifts from William Seward, the then Secretary of State.
