Two Ohio women face felony charges for propping dead man in car, driving to bank, withdrawing cash

Loreen Bea Feralo, 55, Karen Casbohm, 63 has been accused of driving the dead body of Douglas Layman, 80, to a bank drive-thru window and withdrawing money

Two women from Ohio are facing felony charges, including gross abuse of a corpse and theft. The two women had driven up to a bank with a dead man propped in the car. They proceeded to withdraw hundreds of dollars of money from his account before abandoning him at a hospital. The case is under investigation, and the women may face additional charges.

Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell and Ashtabula Prosecuting Attorney Cecilia Cooper shared details of the unusual felony. Karen Casbohm, 63, and Loreen Bea Feralo, 55, have been charged after they dropped off the body of Douglas Layman, 80, at Ashtabula County Medical Center emergency room without providing any information.

Police said the women had found the 80-year-old man dead in the house where they lived with him, although they were not related to him. They decided to prop him up in a car and used the corpse that was made to sit upright and withdraw money from a bank.

Earlier, these women had been allowed to withdraw money from Layman’s bank account when he was present in the vehicle.

Instead of informing the police or calling an ambulance after they found his body, the women decided to withdraw money instead, and the amount is reportedly about $900.

The cause of death of Douglas Layman has not as yet been confirmed. According to the Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office, it is pending, as the case is still under investigation.

Court records at the Ashtabula Municipal Court show that both women face previous charges. Karen Casbohm has faced theft charges and received stolen property. Loreen Bea Feralo had several drug charges against her in the past.

Attorney Cecilia Cooper said that they have been charged with “felonies of the 5th degree.” This means they could face prison time of up to one year and a fine.
