Warnings About the Popular Vampire Facial Are Shocking- What the Danger Are

Celebrities have been known to pay over $1500 for the Vampire facial. Kim Kardashian West put the facial in the limelight back in 2013 with a scary selfie of herself during a “vampire facial.” She has since then not advised others to go through the procedure.  Other celebrities such as model Bar Refaeli and British actor Rupert Everett have also had the procedure. It’s been touted as a mini facelift without going under the knife.

A controversial beauty procedure known as the “vampire facial” has grown in favor recently and promises youthful, beautiful skin. This technique, made popular by celebrities, involves drawing out a patient’s own blood, separating the platelet-rich plasma (PRP), then injecting or micro needling the PRP back into the face. While supporters of this practice tout a variety of advantages, including an increased collagen production and skin renewal, it is important to investigate any potential risks.

How the Vampire Facial is Performed

A small amount of the patient’s blood is drawn during a vampire facial, usually from the arm. The plasma, which contains platelets rich in growth factors, is then separated from the other blood components by spinning the blood in a centrifuge. This platelet-rich plasma is either topically administered or directly injected into the skin using tiny needles to increase absorption by micro needling.

The concentrated growth factors in PRP, according to proponents of the vampire facial, can heal some skin disorders like acne scars and hyperpigmentation as well as enhance skin texture, decrease fine lines and wrinkles, and stimulate the formation of collagen. Additionally, they assert that using the patient’s own blood lessens the possibility of negative effects.

Hazards of the Vampire Facial

The possibility of contamination or illness is a serious risk related to vampire facials. Bacteria can enter the treatment area through improper sterilization procedures, unsterilized equipment, or untrained practitioners. Two clients of a New Mexico spa received an HIV diagnosis after receiving a vampire facial in 2018, drawing attention to the dangers of bloodborne illnesses and the value of sterile procedures.

Skin damage and allergic reactions pose risk.

A popular method in vampire facials is micro-needling, which involves making microscopic incisions in the skin to promote collagen formation. But if done improperly or too forcefully, it can cause skin injury, scarring, and protracted redness. The micro needling solution or other items used during the operation could also cause allergic reactions in those with sensitive skin, which could result in inflammation and irritation.

In New Mexico, a spa was shut down for people testing positive for aids due to contaminated needles. The facial involves needles so the procedure can involve dangerous pathogens. A “vampire facial” at a New Mexico spa has been linked to a new HIV case, state health officials said on Wednesday, years after the establishment shuttered. According to the New Mexico Department of Health, the patient’s only self-reported HIV risk exposure occurred during a vampire facial they had at VIP Spa in Albuquerque in 2018.

Cosmetologists performing these procedures must be trained for blood borne pathogens and certificates should be displayed by salon or the licensed practitioner.

Scientific Evidence Not Supported

Although a few tiny studies have suggested PRP therapy may have some advantages, there is still a dearth of research to back up the effectiveness of vampire facials. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, while PRP has demonstrated promising results in a few medicinal applications, there is not enough evidence to warrant its use in cosmetic procedures. The claims relating to the efficacy of vampire facials should be addressed with caution in the absence of strong clinical data.
