Early Tuesday, part of an important bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, collapsed after it was struck by a cargo ship. The ship sent a Mayday signal, and key traffic on the bridge was closed. However, the initial impact of the ship caused construction workers on the bridge to plunge into the icy waters. Divers and sonar crews continue rescue operations. The bridge has been closed from both ends. Preliminary reports say that the bridge collapse was an accident and not an act of terrorism.
At around 1:30 a.m., Dali’s cargo ship hit a pillar on the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland. According to MarineTraffic, a maritime data platform, the 948-long cargo ship had left Baltimore port at 1 a.m. and was proceeding toward Sri Lanka.
The Governor of Maryland, Wes Moore, said that the cargo ship reported to the authorities that it had lost power. He also said that there was no “credible evidence of a terrorist attack” and termed the crash an accident. He praised the rapid response of workers who stopped cars from traveling on the bridge to save lives and called them “heroes.”
Eight construction workers were reportedly working on the bridge, filling potholes. The bridge had no structural faults. Transportation Secretary of Maryland Paul J. Wiedefeld said that divers had rescued two people, one of whom had been hospitalized.
He also said that authorities do not think that any drivers in their cars have submerged in the waters below. All the crew members in the cargo ship Dali are reported to be safe.
Governor Moore has declared a state of emergency. His office is in close communication with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. The White House released a statement stating President Joe Biden was briefed about the collapse.
