President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden stood solemnly with grieving families as the remains of US troops arrived at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, US, on Friday. Biden placed his gloved right hand over his heart as soldiers carried the transfer cases of the three American service members who were killed over the weekend during a drone attack in Jordan.
Biden and others stood at the base of an aircraft. They looked on as the transfer cases that were draped with American flags were carried by service members from a C-5 Galaxy military transport aircraft to a waiting van nearby. The van will transport the remains to a mortuary facility, following which they will reach their final resting places. The operation was carried out in almost absolute silence except for a brief prayer by an Air Chaplain who requested God for “grace and mercy.”
The three soldiers whose remains reached US soil on Friday were
Sgt. William Jerome Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia
Sgt. Breonna Moffett, 23, of Savannah and
Sgt. Kennedy Sanders, 24, of Waycross.
Other dignitaries who attended the solemn ceremony included Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who walked with the help of a cane, General CQ Brown, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and senators and representatives from Georgia, Moffett, and Delaware.
Rivers, Sanders, and Moffett were from different parts of Georgia but were in the same company of Army engineers. Sanders and Moffett have been posthumously promoted to sergeant rank.
Earlier, the Bidens had privately met the families of the soldiers who were killed overseas on January 28. They met at the Center for Families of the Fallen. Earlier in the week, President Biden had spoken to the families after the drone attack.
President Biden returned to Air Force 1 after the ceremony concluded. He did not make any public remarks after the solemn ceremony.
