On Tuesday, December 19, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin successfully launched its New Shepard rocket. This is its first successful mission after 15 months. It had no crew but carried scientific payloads for NASA, K–12 schools, universities, and STEAM-focused (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) organizations. New Shepard has been designed to carry both tourists and payloads.

Blue Origin’s New Shepard suborbital vehicle lifted off at around 11.44 a.m. EST. It was launched from billionaire Jeff Bezos’ space company’s site in Van Horn, West Texas, after facing a few hitches. The mission had originally been planned for Monday, December 18 but was pushed back a day due to cold temperatures and ground issues.

The first stage of the rocket landed near the planned launching site. The spacecraft descended back to Earth with parachutes. There was a live stream from Blue Origin.

Today’s mission by Blue Origin, called NS-24, carried 33 research payloads. Its mission description detailed the payloads and also said that it would tote 38,000 postcards for Club for the Future. This club is a nonprofit run by Bezos’s company and aims to increase interest in space science and exploration among young people. It included physical postcards as well as digital submissions.

Blue Origin has not yet released its launch date with humans. However, it has made preparations, including the addition of an elevator to the launch tower. This was added by collaborating with AstroAccess, whose founder, Dylan Thomas, was a customer on the NS-19 space flight of Blue Origin on December 11, 2021.

Blue Origin said that it had learned from the failure of its mission last year. Six launches from Blue Origin have carried humans, including celebrity stars such as William Shatner.
