Five Memphis Officers Charged with Murder in Death of Tyre Nichols – Video Cam to Be Released Friday.
Tyre Nichols, a Black man, died on January 10th after being pulled over for reckless driving. He left the scene of the traffic check but was apprehended after two “confrontations” with authorities, according to police.
Former officers, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith have been charged with murder. Two EMTS on the scene have been released from their duties.
The District Attorney Steve Mulroy said on January 23rd, 2023, “Earlier today, we met with the family of Tyre Nichols— who have now seen the video. Transparency is a priority for the DA’s Office, and we understand the public’s desire for immediate release. However, it’s important that the release does not compromise the investigation.”
The bodycam video will be released Friday, Jan 27, 2023, at 6PM. which will show the arrest of Nichols who died after arrest. The community is hopeful protests will be quiet and no one will insight any violence.
We’re working with the TBI and FBI to expedite that investigation and are consulting regularly with the City of Memphis about the video’s release, which we expect will occur this week or next.

Nichols, who died three days after a traffic stop, was a “failing of basic humanity.” “In light of the horrific circumstances surrounding the death of Tyre Nichols, it is absolutely incumbent upon me, your chief, to address the status of what the Memphis Police Department is doing, has done and will continue to do in furtherance of finding truth in this tragic loss – ensuring we communicate with honesty and transparency, and that there is absolute accountability for those responsible for Tyre’s death.”
Officers can spend 15 to 60 years in prison under Tennessee law as second-degree murder is a class A felony under Tennessee laws.
