King Charles III addressed the nation through a recorded message on the traditional occasion of Maundy Thursday. The monarch gave gifts in a traditional ceremony at Worcester Cathedral. The tradition dates to the 13th century and King John. Queen Camilla attended the service this year as she took on additional duties after Charles’s cancer diagnosis.

King Charles began the video by reading from the Bible—The First Lesson from the Gospel of John. He then expressed “great sadness” that he was unable to attend the service at Worcester Cathedral on Maundy Thursday. He pledged to continue “not to be served but to serve” with his “whole heart.”

The monarch also commended those who “extend the hand of friendship” when needed most. He also spoke of the recipients of Maundy money, describing them as “wonderful examples of such kindness” and praising them for “going way beyond the call of duty” and more.

Although King Charles recorded a video message, only the audio was played, as Worcester Cathedral did not have provisions to play the video.

As per tradition, Maundy gifts are given to several recipients who match the monarch’s age. As King Charles is 75, 75 men and 75 women received symbolic coins this year. They received symbolic silver coins in a red purse.

King Charles is expected to attend Easter service at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor. This will be his first significant public appearance after his cancer diagnosis. He moved to Windsor and was advised not to attend public events while receiving treatment, but he has continued with correspondence and other official duties.

Easter this year will be a more minor event. The Prince and Princess of Wales and their children will not attend the church service, as Princess Catherine is recuperating from cancer.
