Mark Zuckerberg has a new goal after creating the metaverse earlier. He wants Meta to focus on general artificial intelligence. He is moving towards this goal by installing FAIR, the AI research group of Meta, in the same part of the company housing the team building generative AI products for apps on Meta. Zuckerberg wants their company’s AI breakthroughs to reach billions who use apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp more directly.
In an exclusive interview with The Verge, Mark Zuckerberg told Alex Heath, “We’ve come to this view that, to build the products that we want to build, we need to build for general intelligence.”
Meta CEO added, “I think that’s important to convey because many of the best researchers want to work on the more ambitious problems.”
He also said that the most challenging resource is the computing power needed for training and running large models. He noted that Meta would own over 340,000 H100 GPUs. These chips from Nvidia are the most sought-after ones to build generative AI. Zuckerberg said that Meta will likely have roughly 600,000 GPUs by the end of next year.
Zuckerberg also reiterated that the metaverse and Reality Labs remain the company’s focus and that they had spent more than $15 billion a year on the metaverse. He said that generative AI would play a more significant role in Meta’s hardware efforts in the future.
