A new video has emerged that shows an Ohio mom, Kristel Candelario, who left her 16-month-old daughter alone in a playpen while holidaying in Puerto Rico, calmly lying to police in a video obtained by a website. The 32-year-old mom initially blamed her daughter for not eating. She suggested that this could be the reason for the child’s death, even though she posted photos of her holiday while the infant was left alone in her home in Cleveland. Many web fans are horrified after viewing the video.
Law & Crime posted the chilling video where the mom, Kristel Candelario, falsely claimed that she had been with her daughter in June before the baby died. The 32-year-old mother had been seen in Detroit and Puerto Rico as she posted vacation pictures on social media.
An affidavit stated that the baby had been found in an emaciated condition and was not breathing. An autopsy revealed the cause of death as starvation as well as severe dehydration.
On Monday, Judge Brendan Sheehan sentenced Kristel Candelario to life in prison without possible parole. The County Common Pleas Court judge described Candelario’s behavior as “the ultimate betrayal” as she left her daughter to starve.
The judge said that Candelario would be confined “in a cell without freedom” just like she had confined her daughter Jailyn, but the difference would be that the prison would feed her and give her the liquids she had denied her daughter.
In February, Candelario pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated murder and child endangerment. On Monday, she claimed that she was struggling with depression during her court appearance. She also said that she was praying for forgiveness.
A neighbor alleged that it was not the first time Candelario had left her young daughter alone in her home, while another said they would have been happy to look after Jailyn if they had been asked to do so.
