Officer Bannick followed all proper protocols in protecting herself against exposure (wearing gloves and utilizing Personal Protective Equipment), however with high winds and a potent narcotic, exposure still occurred, ultimately causing her to overdose.

On December 13, 2022 at approximately midnight, Officer Bannick conducted a traffic stop where various narcotics and paraphernalia were located in a vehicle and on the occupants of the vehicle. Prior to transporting to the Lake County Jail, Officer Bannick keyed up on the radio where she was heard breathless and choking.
Corporal O’Shea with our department recognized that her voice sounded different and walked to her vehicle to check on her, where he found her slipping in and out of consciousness and needing medical assistance. Corporal O’Shea, Sergeant Mahaney, and Lieutenant Brown (Astatula Police Department K-9 handler) immediately rendered aid by utilizing NARCAN. Officer Bannick became unresponsive and lifeless several times while waiting for Emergency Medical Services to arrive on scene, which is why three doses of NARCAN were needed. NARCAN, is a medication that is used in emergency incidents when an individual is overdosing on an opiate.
Tavares Police Department is thankful for our officers quick response in aiding Officer Bannick. Officer Bannick recognizes that without her coworker’s nearby, the outcome could have been quite different. Tavares Police Department commends Corporal O’Shea, Sergeant Mahaney and Lieutenant Brown for their quick thinking and actions that ultimately saved their fellow officer.
The individuals involved in the traffic stop are facing felony charges. When we are able to release more details, we will do so.
