The New York City Police Department has taken into custody a 15-year-old migrant from Venezuela. The suspect had reportedly shot a security guard in Times Square, New York City, but wounded a tourist on Thursday night. The teen and two friends stole merchandise from a store. When confronted by a security guard, the teen opened fire and shot a tourist. He also shot at an NYPD officer who chased him.
Video surveillance shows a shooter, who was dressed in all white, opening fire at a female security guard, who is seen inside JD Sports in Times Square. The police said that the suspect and two friends stole clothes and sneakers. When confronted by the security guard, the teen walks away, turns, points a .45 caliber pistol, and fires it.
The police said that the bullet missed the security guard but hit a tourist from Brazil. There was chaos as people started running and taking cover. The suspect, whom a police officer chased, turned and fired towards the officer. The tourist has been released from the hospital and is fine.
The New York Police Department conducted a manhunt for the suspect and his friends. He was identified as Jesus Alejandro Rivas-Figueroa and taken into custody when he was found in Yonkers with his mother. He reportedly came to New York not even six months ago and was living at a migrant shelter. He was crying when he was arrested.
Police sources said that he was also suspected of committing other crimes, including an armed robbery in the Bronx in January and a Midtown shooting where no one was injured.
On Friday morning, another suspect, who was 16 years old, was also taken into custody. Another 15-year-old was arrested after the shoplifting incident occurred in Times Square.
This shooting incident comes less than two weeks after two members of the NYPD were assaulted by a group of migrants on January 27 in Times Square.
