Authorities said three people were killed and three others were injured in a shooting targeting a Kurdish cultural center in a busy Paris neighborhood on Friday. A 69-year-old suspect, who was recently released from prison after attacking migrants who lived in tents, was injured and apprehended. Investigators are looking into a possible racist motive for the shooting.

A few hours after the shooting, skirmishes erupted in the neighborhood as members of the Kurdish community chanted anti-Turkish government slogans and police fired tear gas to disperse the increasingly agitated crowd. Some garbage cans were set ablaze.

The unrest erupted after a man described by witnesses as tall, white, and elderly opened fire on two men and a woman on Rue d’Enghien in Paris’s 10th district. One of the three injured people was said to be in critical condition, while the others were being treated for serious injuries. Although no motive has been established, Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau stated that the suspect had previously been charged with racist violence. That incident, in which he attacked tents at a migrant camp in Paris with a sword, occurred on December 8, 2021, at Bercy. It was unclear why he had been recently released.

The gunman was also injured in the shooting, according to local Mayor Alexandra Cordebard, and three locations were targeted: the Kurdish community center, a restaurant, and a hairdresser. Police eventually apprehended the suspect without resistance and recovered the weapon used in the attack, according to reports. Prosecutors announced that a murder investigation had been launched.

The Kurdish Democratic Council in France (CDF-K), which runs the attacked Ahmet-Kaya Kurdish center, issued a brief statement condemning the attack. According to Le Monde, a spokesperson for the center, Agit Polat, French authorities have “once again” failed to protect Kurds living in Paris. Fans are devastated.

French President Emmanuel Macron praised police for their “courage” and stated that the capital’s Kurdish community had been the “target of a heinous attack.” The shooting occurred nearly ten years after the murder of three Kurdish women activists in the city in January 2013. Among the activists was a co-founder of the militant nationalist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). For that attack, a Turkish man was charged with the murders, but he died before he could be tried.

The Kurdish Democratic Council in France (CDF-K) has condemned the attack. In its statement, it referred to the historic case, saying the attack on Friday occurred shortly before the 10th anniversary of the Kurdish activists’ triple assassination in Paris on 9 January 2013. So far, no official link has been established between the two incidents.
