Lear’s publicist confirmed to Variety that he died at his home in Los Angeles of natural causes. A private service for immediate family will be held in the coming days.

Norman Lear is an acclaimed American television producer, writer, and director who has revolutionized television and had a lasting impression on the entertainment business. Lear, who was born in 1922, is most renowned for developing and directing classic sitcoms in the 1970s, including “All in the Family,” “The Jeffersons,” and “Maude.” In addition to being entertaining, his series challenged social standards, pushed the bounds of TV narrative, and addressed important social concerns.

Beyond his artistic achievements, Lear is remembered for having been a key figure in turning television into a serious medium for social commentary. His willingness to tackle contentious subjects and his dedication to authenticity cleared the path for a new generation of storytellers. Norman Lear is a trailblazer whose influence extends well beyond the screen because he reminds us that television can both reflect and alter the cultural debate.

Six Primetime Emmys, two Peabody Awards, the National Medal of Arts in 1999, the Kennedy Center Honors in 2017, and the Golden Globe Carol Burnett Award in 2021 were just a few of the numerous honors bestowed upon Lear. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Television Academy.

President Bill Clinton gave Lear the National Medal of Arts in 1999, saying, “Norman Lear has held up a mirror to American society and changed the way we look at it.” Additionally in 1999, he and Bud Yorkin were honored with the Women in Film Lucy Award, which recognized their excellence and inventiveness in producing television-based works that improved the public’s perspective of women.

Norman Lear had multiple marriages throughout his life. His first marriage was to Frances Loeb, the publisher of Lear’s magazine, lasting from 1956 to 1985. They separated in 1983, and their divorce settlement saw Loeb receiving $112 million. In 1987, Lear entered into his second marriage with producer Lyn Davis, his current wife. Additionally, Lear became a godparent to actress and singer Katey Sagal. Over the course of his three marriages, Lear became a parent to six children and a grandparent to four grandchildren. Notably, on July 27, 2022, Lear celebrated his centenary, marking a significant milestone in his long and impactful life.

RIP Norman Lear
