President Joe Biden used the authority bestowed on him to veto a bill that was passed in Congress. The bill proposed to claw back student loan forgiveness. Although the bill had an easy passage through the House of Representatives, which has a Republican majority, it was a surprise when it passed through the Senate. However, Biden’s veto means that the bill is scrapped as it didn’t get sufficient votes that would override a presidential veto.
President Biden announced that he would veto the bill in a video on Wednesday. He also said that he would continue to support efforts toward student loan forgiveness. President Biden had made student debt relief a central part of his campaign promises.
After vetoing the resolution President Biden said, “It is a shame for working families across the country that lawmakers continue to pursue this unprecedented attempt to deny critical relief to millions of their own constituents.”

Biden also reiterated his commitment for college education to be affordable as well as to provide “critical relief to borrowers” as he noted that they were continuing “to recover from a once-in-a-century pandemic.”
Opponents of the Biden administration’s student debt relief measures needed a two-third majority in both the House and the Senate. The Senate passed the vote 52-46 which was insufficient to override the veto.
In the Senate, three members helped the Republicans get a majority although it was a futile exercise as President Biden was firm in his intention to exercise his veto power. Those who joined the Republicans in the vote in the Senate are

Joe Manchin—Democrat Senator from West Virginia and
Kyrsten Sinema—Independent from Arizona.
The forgiveness plan is on hold as the Supreme Court considers two cases related to the plan. It might give a decision by this month.
