Bill Gates buys over $900 million stake in Heineken, has said ‘not a big beer drinker’

Billionaire founder of Microsoft Bill Gates has bought a 3.76 percent stake in Heineken Holding NV. Years ago, Gates has said that he was “not a big beer drinker.” In a filing, Netherlands’ Financial Markets Authority said that Gates had bought the shares on February 17. The Dutch company Heineken Holding NV controls the brewer Heineken NV.

Mexican company FEMSA sold its shares in Heineken Holding. The company sold all the 18 million shares it held in Heineken Holding NV, according to another filing on February 17. Gates bought 10.8 million of the Mexican company held shares for about $939.87 million. The disclosure was made as per a requirement of Dutch stock market rules.

Earlier in a Reddit discussion in 2018, Bill Gates had said that he was “not a big beer drinker. In an “Ask Me Anything” chat session the Microsoft founder had said, “When I end up at something like a baseball game, I drink light beer to get with the vibe of all the other beer drinkers. Sorry to disappoint real beer drinkers.”

There was no immediate response from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation when asked for comment.

Meanwhile, Heineken has also said that its plan to exit Russia was still on, although it would result in a loss. The company was responding to a report by Dutch media that questioned the giant beer maker on its promise to leave Russia, in March 2022.
