As a golf dispute turned violent, a Memphis community leader had to be hospitalized as his assailant was arrested on assault charges. Wesley Caldwell of Nesbit, Mississippi, has been charged with aggravated assault after allegedly striking a player struck Mark Coleman in the head with his club on December 3, necessitating emergency surgery to repair ‘significant brain damages,’ according to Memphis police. Caldwell, who is white, allegedly became enraged after Coleman, who is black, hit a ball into his hole at the Links at Whitehaven golf course.

The 22-year-old Caldwell, according to one witness who was playing with Coleman, picked up Coleman’s ball, threw it across the course, and then hit Coleman on the left side of his face with a golf club. Coleman collapsed and was airlifted to the hospital with a fractured skull and internal bleeding in the brain.

Memphis community leader Mark Coleman, who is still in the hospital, suffered “significant brain injuries” as a result of the assault, according to reports. Coleman reportedly attempted to walk away but became disoriented and was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery to arrest the bleeding in the brain.

Caldwell was released from jail on a $5,000 bond after being charged with aggravated assault and is scheduled to appear before a judge. According to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Memphis Branch, there is a community call to try to upgrade the charge to attempted murder. Fans are devastated.

The NAACP is now reportedly advocating for the assault charge to be upgraded to ‘attempted murder.’ Celebrity Coleman has long been a fixture in Memphis civic life, said the NAACP in a statement. The NAACP claims Coleman was attacked while attempting to calm a tense situation. Coleman’s family also argued that the $5,000 bond was too low given the allegations. Caldwell is scheduled to appear in court on January 17 once again.
