Celebrity singer Mariah Carey has collaborated with Walter Afanasieff in the past. However, in a recent interview, Afanasieff, her co-writer and co-producer of the super hit All I Want For Christmas has criticized the pop singer for trying to take all the credit for their joint collaboration.
Appearing on the podcast Hot Takes & Deep Dives, Afanasieff accused the singer of telling a “tall tale” about the hit song for a decade. He said that her claims that she had written the song when she was a child, on a Casio keyboard was wrong. Both he and Carey put the song together after they worked together on her album Music Box, in 1999.
In the podcast, Afanasieff said that both of them (Mariah and he) were “on the same page” on how the song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was written. He said that the narrative had changed about 10 years ago, when she started hinting that she wrote the song when she was “a little girl.”
He questioned why wasn’t she “saying that for 12 or 13 or 15 years prior to that?” He added, “So, it just sort of developed in her mind.” Afanasieff further criticized Mariah Carey’s musical abilities and said that she didn’t play any musical instruments such a keyboard or piano. He said that she didn’t understand music and was unaware of chord changes or music theory and more.
He called the claim that she wrote the “very complicated chord-structured song” All I Want For Christmas “with her finger on a Casio keyboard when she was a little girl” was “kind of a tall tale.”
According to him, he and Mariah Carey came up with the song together when they were working on her Christmas album Merry Christmas. He said that Mariah Carey was responsible for most of the lyrics while he was responsible for the music as well as the chords.
Celebrity singer Mariah Carey has not as yet responded to the comments Walter Afanasieff made in this interview.
