A Colorado police officer was found guilty of two felonies on Thursday in the 2019 death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man whose case garnered widespread media attention. The second officer Jason Rosenblatt accused was declared innocent. and found not guilty on all counts.

What happened: On August 24, 2019, McClain, a massage therapist, was approached by law authorities as he was making his way home from a convenience shop. A suspicious individual wearing a ski mask had been reported by a 911 caller.

He was then held by police and placed in a chokehold before receiving 500 milligrams of ketamine from paramedics. On August 27, Elijah McClain experienced a heart arrest and was pronounced brain dead. Three days later, McClain’s life support was turned off.

Officer Randy Roedema of Aurora, Colorado, was convicted guilty of third-degree assault and criminally negligent homicide. He will be sentenced on January 5 and, according to the AP, could spend up to three years in prison on a more serious homicide charge.

Aurora police chief Art Acevedo issued a statement Thursday evening saying, “We respect the verdict handed down by the jury and thank the members of the jury for their thoughtful deliberation and service.”

The case was resurrected in 2020 when Colorado Gov. Jared Polis ordered state Attorney General Phil Weiser to investigate in response to rising pressure from Black Lives Matter activists. In 2019, the local district attorney declined to file charges against police or paramedics.

In November, a hearing is scheduled for the two paramedics involved, Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec.
