Idaho students Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were found dead first by Chapin’s best friend on November 13, hours after the quadruple murders took place. The unidentified friend had gone to their Moscow, Idaho home and checked their pulse before calling 911 from a surviving roommate, Dylan Mortensen’s cellphone about eight hours later.

According to sources, after checking the two victims’ pulses, Chapin’s friend yelled at Mortensen, another roommate, and other people to dial 911. Despite the fact that Mortensen’s phone was used for the call, new information has shown that the best friend actually spoke with the police.

Questions about why Mortensen had not called 911 sooner surfaced shortly after the killings, as she had seen the suspected quadruple murderer Byran Kohberger. In the early morning hours of November 13, she allegedly called on her friends and roommates and yelled at them, claiming that she was “trying to sleep!” After that, Mortensen shut and locked her door, reported the New York Post. When Mortensen opened her door again that night after hearing more commotion, she saw the accused Kohberger but mistook him for a partygoer.

Mortensen told police that throughout the night, she heard several fights and when she opened her door, she saw a suspect wearing a mask over his face and heard one of her roommates say, “Someone’s here.” In addition, as he entered the house and carried out the heinous act, she overheard the suspect say, “It’s okay, I’m here to help you.”

Although it has not been confirmed who spoke to the police, authorities have confirmed that one of the surviving housemates called 911 to ask for assistance for an unconscious person. Some have argued that Mortensen might have been “frozen” with fear if she hadn’t dialed 911 right away.

Chapin and Kernodle were killed on the second floor of the house, after Goncalves and Mogen. Chapin’s fingers had deep cuts and Chapin had repeatedly grabbed the suspect’s knife in a struggle to fend off the murderer. It appeared that Chapin’s neck had been slashed.

In December, Bryan Kohberger, a WSU student majoring in criminology, was charged with the killings after a knife sheath’s DNA was found to match his.
