Kiss Me Goodbye? Celebrity hard rock band sells brand and songs for $300 million

Celebrity hard rock band Kiss recently sold its back catalog of songs, brand, likeness, and intellectual property for $300 million to a Swedish music investor. Although web fans are happy that the iconic band has cashed in on its fame, they are also disappointed that the sale of all Kiss assets may indicate a goodbye to new music from them. They will also no longer perform live.

Stockholm-based Pophouse Entertainment bought Kiss’s assets. The financial details of the deal have not been revealed. Still, the amount is similar to that of the famous British band Genesis but less than the amount received for American King of Pop Michael Jackson’s back catalog, which sold for $600 million.

Since Pophouse will own music rights, brand, and intellectual property sales, the Swedish firm can generate AI-generated content in the future. In December 2023, the company collaborated with Kiss to produce flying avatars that launched into one of their biggest hit songs, God Gave Rock ‘n’ Roll to You.

Kiss performed for the last time live at Madison Square Garden, New York City, in early December last year. The avatar finale was conjured up by the same companies collaborating on the Abba Voyage show, which recreates an Abba concert from the 1970s in a custom-built London arena.

Kiss was one of the larger-than-life bands of the 1970s and 1980s. The group was founded in 1973 by Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. It included Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Kiss was known as a band that rocked with eye-catching makeup.

Simmons and Stanley are expected to continue to participate in the company’s development of its Kiss brand through AI-generated material from its library of work and other means.

Pophouse Entertainment has made the Abba Voyage show a super hit in London and will expand globally. It remains to be seen if Kiss will also have a similar show. Many Kiss web fans would be thrilled if the band had a show similar to Abba’s.
