The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall for over two million bikes from Peloton Interactive Inc. (PTON). The Thursday recall was for model PL-01. This model is described as the original bike and has been sold from 2018 to date. Peloton said that 35 of the 2.16 bikes sold had bike seats breaking off during use. There were 13 reports of injuries. Peloton’s shares fell by seven percent after the recall.
The CPSC described the hazard: “The bike’s seat post assembly can break during use, posing fall and injury hazards to the user.” It recommended a repair remedy for about 2.2 million bikes that could be affected by this safety hazard.

The CPSC asked consumers to stop using these recalled bikes (model PL-01) and to contact the manufacturer for a free repair. Consumers have been offered a free seat post by Peloton. It can be self-installed.
The report also said that the 13 people who had been injured had different injuries including lacerations and bruises as they fell off the bike. There was also a report of a wrist fracture.
Peloton will not offer users a full refund unless the bike is bought within 30 days of the delivery date. However, users registered on the Peloton site can use the product recall page to get information about the way in which they could a get a free seat post as well as receive instructions on how to install the seat. They can also call the company to get information on the same.

Peloton Bike+ members and Peloton original bike owners in countries such as U.K., Germany and Australia have not been impacted by the possibility of an unexpected seat post break.
Earlier in January 2023, Peloton had agreed to pay a fine of $19 million as the company failed to promptly report a defect in Tread+ treadmill. This defect might cause serious injury and also resulted in one death in 2021.
