Romanian Court Places Celebrity Andrew Tate on 30-Day Pre-Trial Detention after Arrest for Human Trafficking, Rape

On Friday, a Romanian court extended the detention of celebrity social media personality, Andrew Tate, by 30 days. The internet personality was arrested on suspicion of rape, human trafficking, and organized crime group.

Prosecutors from the anti-organized crime unit raided Andrew and his brother Tristan’s properties in Bucharest on Thursday and detained them for an initial 24 hours, along with two Romanian suspects. On Thursday night, the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism in Romania issued a statement.

According to prosecutors, the brothers are suspects in an alleged organized crime ring that recruited, housed, and forced at least six women to perform pornographic videos for sale online. Officers identified six people who had been “sexually exploited” by a “organized criminal group,” according to the statement.

The brothers are accused of using the “loverboy method” to lure women to lavish villas, in which they created a social media relationship and convinced the women to travel to Romania in order to pursue a romantic relationship. The women were later forced to perform in pornographic content under threat of violence.

Tate has been in Romania for five years. Police were allegedly alerted to Tate’s presence in the country after he posted a video mocking environmental activist Greta Thunberg.

The former kickboxer rose to prominence in 2016 after being booted from the British TV show Big Brother due to a video that appeared to show him assaulting a woman. He became well-known online, with Twitter had banned him for saying that women should “bear responsibility” for any sexual assault. Tate, on expulsion, had said the video had been edited and called it “a total lie.” He was later reinstated.

Prosecutors said the brothers have been under criminal investigation since April, when police searched the celebrity’s Bucharest mansion in connection with human trafficking allegations, according to Reuters. The police department also released a video of the raid, which showed guns, knives, and money on display in one room.

On December 28, environmental activist Great Thunberg ignited Twitter with a colorful retort after internet personality Andrew Tate attempted to bait her on the platform.

The former kickboxer took to Twitter two days after Christmas to address Thunberg in a tweet about his carbon-dioxide-emitting cars.

“Good day, @GretaThunberg.” I own 33 vehicles. My Bugatti is powered by a w16 8.0L quad turbo engine. My TWO Ferrari 812 Competetiziones are powered by 6.5L v12 engines. This is only the beginning. Please provide your email address so that I may send you a complete list of my car collection and their massive emissions.”  Fans  on both sides are waiting for more news to come out.

Thunberg, who rose to prominence as a child activist in 2019 by pressing world leaders to address climate change at the UN Climate Action Summit, responded to Tate the next day, on December 28.

Andrew Tate is a British-American kickboxer who was banned from Twitter in 2017 for his controversial take on the Me Too movement, in which he stated that ‘women should bear some responsibility for being raped’. In 2016, videos of him hitting a woman with a belt surfaced, and he was kicked off Big Brother.
