Celebrity host Don Lemon is known for his offensive comments in the past, but yesterday’s faux pas finally seems to have had consequences as he was absent from CNN This Morning. About twenty-four hours ago, Lemon made a sexist comment about Nikki Haley and said she was “not in her prime.” Co-host Poppy Harlow walked off the set. Reports said that women staff at CNN were upset at his remarks, and this was not the first time Lemon had behaved in such an offensive manner.

On Friday morning, the show began with a clip showing Harlow at Salt Lake City, where she was interviewing TNT’s star basketball commentators. Poppy Harlow is covering NBA All-Star Weekend festivities. In the clip, she was interviewing Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith.

The show then moved to co-host Kaitlan Collins. She was seated next to Audie Cornish, who was sitting in for Don Lemon. Collins said, “Don has the day off.” She also introduced Cornish, who is a former National Public Radio (NPR) journalist.

Collins also mentioned that Poppy was in Utah for the NBA All-Star Game. She said they would get back to the game later and went on to the top news of the day, on Friday morning.

The New York Post claimed that a source told them that there had been “smoldering” tensions for months between Lemon, Collins, and Harlow. Lemon’s latest sexist comments might have been the final straw.

Another source told the Post that CNN head honcho Chris was unhappy and had spoken to Don, who knew that it “can’t happen again.” The morning show host was reportedly rebuked by Licht.

The New York Times reported that they obtained a recording of a call by Mr. Licht to his staff at CNN. According to the outlet, Mr. Licht said, “His remarks were upsetting, unacceptable and unfair to his co-hosts, and ultimately a huge distraction to the great work of this organization.”

Mr. Lemon’s sexist remarks dismayed his CNN This Morning, co-anchors Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins. The morning show was a supposed statement of intent by Mr. Licht, showing his vision for the network. However, Lemon’s recent remarks might have distracted the vision of the show as well as that of CNN which has seen its ratings fall as veteran hosts have left the network or have been fired by the new bosses.

Mr. Lemon said, “A woman is considered to be in her prime in her 20s and 30s and maybe 40s.” He added, “Don’t shoot the messenger. I am just saying what the facts are. Google it.”

On Friday, in a six-minute monologue to the CNN newsroom, Mr. Lemon seemingly sounded contrite and apologized and said that he didn’t “mean to hurt anyone” or “to offend anyone” and more.

Neither CNN, nor Lemon, nor Harlow have immediately responded, when asked for comment.
