Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said that eight high school students from Nevada have been arrested on murder charges this week. They allegedly severely beat a 17-year-old schoolmate in an alley close to the school campus. The 17-year-old was beaten till he became senseless, and he died of his injuries a few days later.

In a news conference on Tuesday, Lieutenant Jason Johansson said that a student at Rancho High School had died of his injuries days after he was attacked. His cause of death, according to an autopsy, was blunt force trauma, the police also said.

The November 1 brawl had taken place over a pair of stolen headphones, according to the police, who also said that the students had planned a meeting that same day in a back alley located less than three hundred feet from the school in Nevada.

The police identified the 17-year-old who died as Jonathan Lewis Jr., a student at the school, but declined to name eight other students, also of Rancho High, who have been arrested after an investigation. They had been booked into Clark County Juvenile Hall.

The Police Department said that the arrests took place on Tuesday and that the ages of the eight students ranged from 13 to 17 years. The department also said that two more people might have been involved in the brawl, and the probe was ongoing.

A GoFundMe page called Team Jonathan described Jonathan Jr. as a “hero” who tried to help a younger child who was being bullied. He was “beaten to death.” The page described him as “an aspiring artist, a kind, loving, caring, and generous young man” and more.

The page said that his family held their son’s hand in the hospital when he was on life support. The page also said that they decided to start a foundation for their son while in the hospital and that they would post updates on the blog section of the page.
