For far too long, concertgoers have been burdened with excessive fees that are added to the ticket prices, often leaving them frustrated and feeling cheated. In a commendable move, the White House has stepped forward to address this issue, signaling a push against the prevalent practice of concert ticket junk fees.
Since the Taylor Swift “Eras” tour tickets went on sale, Ticketmaster has come under fire. Customers encountered internet failures and protracted wait times throughout the presale due to the high demand.
Due to a lack of inventory to match the demand, the company ultimately decided to cancel the sale entirely.
Since then, monopolistic practices have been alleged to have taken place, and certain state attorneys general have launched investigations. The Senate also called on the Justice Department to get involved after a hearing on Live Nation’s lack of competition in January.
The Problem with Concert Ticket Junk Fees
Concert ticket prices have steadily risen over the years, and fans have come to expect certain unavoidable fees like service charges and taxes. However, what has raised eyebrows and caused discontent among music enthusiasts are the additional, seemingly arbitrary fees tacked onto the ticket prices. These fees can include processing fees, convenience fees, printing fees, facility fees, and even fees for electronic ticket delivery. Collectively, they are referred to as “concert ticket junk fees.”
These junk fees often add a significant percentage to the total ticket cost, leaving fans feeling deceived and exploited.
